OpenCat started in late 2024 as a weekend project by our founder, Yuki Tanaka, who missed her childhood cat while working long hours at her Tokyo apartment. She wondered: "What if I could have a cat that lives in my browser?"

What began as a simple Live2D cat sitting in the corner of a Chrome tab quickly evolved into something much bigger. Friends and colleagues wanted their own virtual cats. They wanted different breeds, different colors, different personalities. The idea resonated.

By early 2025, Yuki had assembled a small but passionate team of engineers, designers, and artists — all cat owners, all working remotely across 6 countries, and all sharing one Slack channel full of cat photos. OpenCat was born.

Today, OpenCat is growing into a platform where you can adopt, customize, and even generate your own unique cat companions using AI technology. And yes, every team meeting still starts with a cat photo roundup. 🐾

We're a small, distributed team spanning 6 countries and 10+ time zones. What unites us? An unreasonable love for cats and a shared dream of making the internet more wholesome, one virtual kitty at a time.
